What to Expect at a Figure Drawing Party in Charleston
First-timers always have the same questions. Here's the real, unfiltered breakdown of what happens, what to wear, and what the vibe is actually like.
Every group has the same reaction when they walk in. A little nervous energy. Some giggling. Someone saying "I can't draw at all." Within ten minutes, everyone is locked in, sketching, laughing, and completely comfortable.
Here is how the session runs so your group knows what to expect.
Before You Arrive
You'll get a confirmation email with your date, time, and location. If you booked our We Come to You option, we'll arrive at your Airbnb or rental about 30 minutes early to set up. Easels, paper, charcoal, pencils, erasers, and champagne. Everything is provided. You don't need to bring anything except your group.
If you booked at our partner venue in Charleston, you'll get the address and parking details in advance.
Wear whatever you want. There's no dress code. Charcoal can smudge, so maybe skip the all-white outfit. Most groups coordinate outfits for photos, and that always looks great, but it's not required.
The First 15 Minutes
Your instructor introduces themselves and walks you through the basics. How to hold charcoal. How to see shapes instead of details. How to loosen up your hand. This part is short, practical, and designed to make everyone feel like they can do this.
Then the model walks in.
This is the moment. The room reacts. Every single time. Gasps, laughter, someone grabbing their friend's arm. It's genuinely one of the best parts of the whole experience. Our models are professionals. They're confident, they're charming, and they know exactly how to set the tone. The energy in the room shifts from "oh god what did we sign up for" to "okay this is amazing" in about thirty seconds.
The Drawing Sessions
The model holds a series of poses, starting shorter and getting longer. Quick gesture sketches first, a few minutes each, to get everyone warmed up. Then longer poses where you can really work on details.
Your instructor circulates the room, giving tips. Proportion, shading, line weight. Real techniques that actually improve your drawing as you go. Nobody is graded. Nobody is put on the spot. But most people are genuinely surprised by how much better their second sketch looks compared to their first.
Between poses, the model takes short breaks. This is when photos happen, conversations flow, and the champagne gets topped off.

The full experience runs about two hours. That includes setup, instruction, multiple drawing sessions, breaks, and wrap-up time. It never feels rushed, and it never drags.
What You Take Home
Every sketch you make is yours. Most people leave with three to five drawings in various stages of completion. Some are legitimately good. Some are hilarious. All of them are conversation starters.
Groups almost always take a big photo at the end, holding up their favorite sketches. That photo ends up everywhere. Instagram, the group chat, framed on someone's wall, brought to the wedding as a joke.
The Questions Everyone Asks
Do I need to know how to draw? No. Most of our guests have never picked up charcoal before. The instruction is designed for complete beginners.
Is it awkward? For about 90 seconds. Then it's the opposite of awkward. The model's professionalism and the instructor's guidance make everyone comfortable fast.
Can we bring our own drinks? For Airbnb bookings, absolutely. Bring whatever you want. We provide champagne to start, and you can supplement with your own bar. For venue bookings, check with us about outside beverages.
What if someone in our group is shy? Every group has at least one person who says they don't want to do it. That person almost always ends up having the best time. The environment is supportive, low-pressure, and genuinely fun.
Is it appropriate for all ages? Our events are designed for adults 21 and over. The experience is tasteful and artistic, but it does feature a nearly nude professional model.
